Tournament Chair's Summary
of the 2011 Evergreen Summer Doubles
2011.07.12 – 2011.07.17

Over 80 people representing 67 teams competed in the 2011 Evergreen Summer Doubles Tournament, July 12 - 19. We had entries from Toronto, Wisconsin, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Victoria. It is hard to believe it was a summer event though, as it was raining throughout most of the week and weekend. That, however, did not dampen the on-court play. With 9 events playing, there was plenty of competition from the novice to the semi-pro level of play. The most notable division was the Mixed open event.

We had some of the top doubles players in the country going out first round (and first round in the consolation). The eventual winners, Tim Martin & Cathy Covernton, who have won this event a few times, had to survive 2 five game marathons on their way to the finals. They admitted the standard of play was better than they have ever seen at this event.

Also notable were the father/son paringsCharles Bristow played with his son David, and Scott Sibley played with his first timer son Jake. Though it was Jake's first time out in a doubles tournament, Scott & Jake made it through to the semi-finals of the Mens Div 1. It won't be long before this father/son duo are playing in the Men's Open.

  • Again there was a full social schedule: a Friday night barbecue; a pool/patio party Saturday night at the Berwick's (thank you Ed & Jill!); and, a wine and cheese party Sunday afternoon after the finals. All events were well attended and a good time had by all.
  • I wish to thank the following people for their help:

    • Rick Kochanski for all his help with the online entry, creating the draws and daily updates on the website;
    • Lynn Broman for promoting this event like know one else can;
    • Kevin and Beryl Johnson for help on the registration desk and bar;
    • Ed and Jill Berwick for hosting the Saturday night party;
    • Jason and Alex Giuffre for the salmon & salads Friday night;
    • Pam Brunswick and Brenda Wither for helping at the bar; and
    • Jeannie Heaney for the pulled pork Friday night (and, especially, for putting up with me all week long).

    A special thank you to The Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club, and Hollyburn Country Club for donating their court during the tournament. We could not run this event without them!

    Thanks for coming out and enjoy the rest of your summer!

    Mark Heaney
    Tournament Chairman
