Evergreen Squash Club — Pure Squash

Juniors welcome!

An Evergreen Squash Club membership is one terrific value.

Have a child at home, who is, perhaps, too small for hockey, football, rugby or basketball. Do not despair. Squash could be the game you are looking for.

Squash builds fitness, mental toughness, and helps create an attitude of success in everyone who takes up the sport. There is a learning curve involved; but, Evergreen Squash Club has the coaches and support required to make the endeavour successful.

Junior members at Evergreen Squash Club have been involved in a successful junior program for many years.

For more information, contact our Junior Director, Phil Arthur using our online form.

Awards and Thank Yous

Club President, Adam Radziminski, offered the club's thanks to the many volunteers who have done so much this past year, and, in particular, Katherine and Michael Walker who have been such a key part of the membership drive.

Adam also introduced The President's Award which will become an annual award to someone in the club who the president feels has contributed in an "above and beyond" manner. The winner of the 2009 president's award was Rick Kochanski in recognition of his work creating a truly exciting and dynamic website for the club. The site has attracted rave reviews from many quarters and provides club members with an ever–changing insight into the vibrant community that is Evergreen. Congrulations Rick!

Brenda Withers presents Charles Bristow with the Bob Withers Memorial Sportsmanship Award.

This year's recipient of the Bob Withers Memorial Sportsmanship Award was Charles Bristow. He was presented with the plaque by Brenda Withers. Congrulations Charles, well deserved!

Club Dinner

The Club Dinner, part of the tournament each year, was held on Saturday the 25th upstairs at the club and, as usual was sold out ahead of time. If you thought last year's 40th anniversary party was great…you should have been there this year, or perhaps you were!

Jolanta, Pam and Monica work on preparing one of the dinner's courses.

The food was delicious and produced by a team of current, and ex, club members who actually seem to enjoy cooking for nearly 100 people!! Entertainment this year was provided by many, including Tim Hunt and Kevin Gillett. Tim sang the world debut of a song he had composed specifcally about the evolution of the Evergreen Squash Club. It is sung to the tune of American Pie…it was outstanding and you can find the lyrics on the web site.

While everyone was tucking into a phenomenal selection of desserts the entertainment was provided by guest comedian Carter Hordie who had the wonderful ability to "include" everyone in his 20 minute set. It was a tough act to follow but Mike Jackson was the right man to do it…

Mike Jackson rounded out the "dinner segment" of the evening with his traditional rousing rendition of The Dog Song…for those of you who have not heard Mike do this song…it is worth the price of admision alone!

More was yet to come — as some tables were cleared to create space for dancing — club member David James assembled his band, The Lemmings, and the second part of the evening began! A varied and powerful set followed with club members dancing their socks off until the wee hours when the band tried to stop. Deafening cries of "MORE, MORE" filled the air, so they returned to their instruments to bang out Rockin in the Free World to send the crowd wild, and then, finally…home!

Volunteers and Clean-Up

Many thanks to the numerous volunteers who made this event what it was. (For those of you who did not volunteer, please consider doing so next year as this is a volunteer run club.) In finishing, it is important to note that the club does not return to normal by itself!

Sunday morning found a small but dedicated crew cleaning dishes, taking out garbage, putting tables back in place, etc. The two club members who did the bulk of this work are both "new" members. So, if you were at the dinner, next time you see Stephen Pienaar or Eike Schroter around the club, please extend your thanks to them for cleaning up after…you!

See you next year.

Mostly written by Charles Bristow.
