On Saturday, January 7, 2012, Squash BC will be holding its annual Semi General and Planning Meeting. The meeting will be held at Vancouver Racquets Club and will start at 9:00 am and go till about 5:00 pm.

The 40th Annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championship will be hosted at the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland, Oregon from January 27-29th. The tournament is open to all levels and all ages and we expect to attract up to 40 teams from up and down the West Coast.

There is a special event going on at Holly Friday night, and we only have access to the doubles court via a door at the North Entrance. There will be signs posted.

The San Francisco Open has been a Doubles exclusive tournament hosted by the University Club since 1985. The University Club's Tournament Committee decided that this year will be different. Why should Doubles Players have all of the fun?

The tournament will run October 27 - 30, 2011. Entry deadline is Friday, October 14, 2011. Please see the entry form for details.

A second session has been added at 8:15PM Thursdays to complement the Sunday morning 11AM session. This provides an opportunity for club members to get in two workouts a week a few days apart, and enjoy some socializing.

Like the Sunday session, the Thursday Round Robin also uses a handicap system.

The new session will begin this Thursday, September 29, 8:15PM, at Court 4.

We would like to gauge interest for the 3rd Annual Evergreen Golf Classic — which is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, July 24th at the Bowen Island Golf Club.

Bowen can give us a 10:20 start time, and accommodate up to 28 golfers. This would require catching the 9am ferry over, and probably the 6pm back. Cost will likely be $70 to $75, and include bus from/to the ferry, post-match burger and prizes.

There appears to be some confusion amongst non-members as to what tournament has been cancelled. For our out-of-town doubles players, the Evergreen Summer Doubles tournament has not been cancelled.

The Evergreen International is a members' tournament held to celebrate our ethnic diversity, and related culinary skills. And, oh yes, we do play some squash as well — with each team competing in both singles and doubles squash. But the big points come from the food and entertainment presented by each team at the closing dinner.

So, see all you dubious doublers in July!

If you wish to attend the Championship Dinner and Awards Presentation, but do not wish to play in the tournament, you still need to use the on-line registration form to reserve your dinner tickets.

Simply select "None" for the Singles event, and don't change anything in the Doubles event section. Fill out the remaining sections appropriately.

If you are playing in an event, just fill out the dinner section appropriately when registering.

Nominations open!

The fifth annual Bob Withers Memorial Sportsmanship Award will be presented during the Club Championships' in early April.

If you know someone deserving of the award, please nominate your candidate using our on-line form.

If you have nominated someone in the past who didn't receive the award, don't let that stop you from nominating them again. All nominations are worthy of the award in some way or another, however only one can be chosen any given year.

The closing date for nominations is midnight Monday, 2011.04.11.

Mike Tooley will be offering a mini ‛Officiating Clinic’ in the upper lounge @ Evergreen on Tuesday, March 29th commencing @ 6:00 PM. It is open to Evergreen Women players (and or their friends/guests *#8212; Hollyburn/VRC/Bonsor/Wherever!?). Particpation fee is $10 per person. The session will last approx. 1 1/2 - 2 hours, dependening on number of participants.

As in any sport, if you “know the rules” and abide by them, you probably have a better chance of winning, and you certainly will have more confidence and enjoyment in playing.

Trudy Austin has been conducting one hour yoga sessions at the club on Saturday mornings at 9:00 for a couple of years now. These are very instructional, and focus on all those body parts that any active squash player can use help in loosening up.

The new sessions will be at noon until 1:00 on Monday afternoons — same drop-in fee of $10.00.

So, please drop in and try it out — Saturday mornings at 9:00, and Mondays at noon. Your body will thank you. Any questions, please contact Trudy Austin.

Here's the story:

Roy Gutteridge's seat mate, the unknown winner — I think his first name is Tim — had bought 50/50 tickets, but had to leave early. So he left the tickets with Roy, and printed his name on the tickets to distinguish his tickets from Roy's. Roy came up to me after the prize giving ceremony and sheepishly asked "is this the winning ticket". I compared the tickets and, voila, we had a winner.

There have been some questions, mostly in the men's locker room, regarding the qualifier draw.

The matches start at 6pm Tuesday & Wednesday. There are 8 matches on Tuesday, and 4 matches on Wednesday. With the winners of the Wednesday matches moving into the main pro draw. The qualifier draw will be decided at the club tomorrow, Monday, January 10, at 6pm.
