Evergreen Squash Club — Pure Squash

Juniors welcome!

An Evergreen Squash Club membership is one terrific value.

Have a child at home, who is, perhaps, too small for hockey, football, rugby or basketball. Do not despair. Squash could be the game you are looking for.

Squash builds fitness, mental toughness, and helps create an attitude of success in everyone who takes up the sport. There is a learning curve involved; but, Evergreen Squash Club has the coaches and support required to make the endeavour successful.

Junior members at Evergreen Squash Club have been involved in a successful junior program for many years.

For more information, contact our Junior Director, Phil Arthur using our online form.

Letter from the Pres…
February 6, 2009

Dear Members:

Please read below for some important news on the new scoring system for singles, our latest call for volunteers, and a summary of recent events.

New Singles Scoring System

As you may or may not know, the World Squash Federation has voted to change the scoring system in all events from Hand-in Hand-out to 9 (HIHO) to Point-a-Rally to 11 (PAR-11) or to 15 (PAR-15). PAR-11 is what the PSA players use. Evergreen Squash Club and the Vancouver Squash League are independent bodies that can mandate whatever scoring system they feel is best.

One of the major concerns that we have heard is the shortened length of matches, and the reduced workout. As a preliminary measure, for the months of February and March, we have set up an online survey to keep track of match length times. What we are encouraging members to do is to try all three scoring systems with their regular partners, and to record match length times (see below for system descriptions). Please try and use for box and ladder matches.

*** If there is a dispute over which scoring system to use, please default to International Scoring. ***

At the end of March, we will be sending a club-wide survey soliciting opinions on the new scoring systems. If you have any questions in the meantime, please let me know.

The survey can be found right on the home page at www.evergreensquash.com.

Scoring System Descriptons

HIHO-9: Hand-in Hand-out to 9
(aka International Scoring)

  • Player must serve in order to score a point. If receiving player wins a rally, he/she becomes the server (hand-out), and can then score a point, if he/she wins the next rally.
  • First player to 9 points wins the game. First player to win 3 games wins the match.
  • At 8-8, the first player to reach 8 points gets to choose whether to play to 9 or 10 points (Set 1 or Set 2)

PAR-11: Point-a-Rally to 11
(aka American Scoring)

  • The winner of the rally scores a point, regardless of whether he/she served the ball (like in doubles). The winner of the rally then becomes the server, and alternates sides.
  • The first player to 11 points wins the game. First to 3 games wins the match.
  • At 10-10, the game continues until a player leads by 2 clear points (e.g. 12-10, 13-11, 14-12, etc, etc).

PAR-15

  • As above, except it is the first player to 15 points
  • Tiebreaker as above, except at 14-14. NOTE - different than the doubles tiebreaker.

Call for Volunteers

The Club will need a lot of volunteers in the upcoming weeks. Some for just an hour or two, and others for more:

  1. Doubles court cleaning - 10am - 1pm - this Saturday, February 7. Please contact Patrick Au - maintenance@evergreensquash.com.
  2. Junior Director and Committee - we have had the most successful junior program in the province for a number of years now. However, due to lack of volunteer support, it is in danger of fading out. We require a new Director and an active committee of parents and club members. If interested, please contact me: info@evergreensquash.com.
  3. Young Adult Coordinator and Committee - we have started a Young Adult Drop-in, and it is proving to be a success. This is a simple role: we just need someone to send out the emails, and make sure that there are members there to run the drop-in every week. Committee members are just the members that run it once every 3-4 weeks.
  4. As we draw closer to our AGM (will be in March this year), we will be in need of some new directors. Positions to be determined. Please contact me: info@evergreensquash.com.
  5. Club tournament committee - please contact me at info@evergreensquash.com. This committee is a lot of fun - headed by Charles Bristow.

Recent Events

The International Tournament was held this past weekend, and was yet another great success. Please check the Evergreen Squash Club web site for a summary, and photos.

The PSA Tournament took place a couple of weeks ago, and was just as great as the previous years. Some great pro squash was played. For a summary, please see the tournament's news page — you'll have to start near the bottom and work up.

Best regards,

Adam Radziminski
